Being a brass band, Greater Bendigo Brass is made up of both brass and percussion instruments. The players in the band range in age from 13 to 70 years of age. The band incorporates players of all abilities and is always looking for new players who wish to be part of a progressive community musical group. The band offers free tuition to those interested in learning music and can also assist with the provision of instruments. Please contact Colin Wellard for further information
Doug was born in Footscray and is a product of the famous Hyde Street School Band.
Following an outstanding career as a soloist on Tenor Horn (including National title seven years in succession and National Champion of Champions three times), Doug has won major Championships with every Band he has trained or conducted since taking up the baton over thirty years ago, and has also conducted bands in Switzerland on his two overseas adventures in 1994 and 1996.
His services as an adjudicator are keenly sought. He has been Chief Adjudicator at the Queensland, N.S.W. (twice), South Australian (thrice) and Tasmanian State Championships, and at many regional festivals and contests.
Doug has received many awards for his contribution to the Brass Band movement. He is a life member of the Footscray-Yarraville City Band and of the Victorian Bands' League. He has received a Tattersall's award for Enterprise and Achievement for his work with the Victorian State Youth Brass Band (10 years as Musical Director, 1985-1995), and in June 1992 was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his services to Brass Band music.
